On Saturday my school had it’s very first Halloween event of the month! Children and their siblings were invited to come and play Halloween themed games, make slime, and trick or treat in our classrooms. It was a great way to end my very busy first week. The staff and I all dressed up for it in very charismatic costumes. I was dressed as Kiki from Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service and everyone thought that it was fitting of my personality. Some of the costumes my coworkers dressed up as were a chipmunk, monkey, pirate, and Jason from Friday the 13th. It was so much fun passing out candy to the kids! They were super excited and looking forward to playing all of the games. Some of them gave me candy too so I got to try some Japanese treats. I appreciate how light and fluffy chocolate things are here. I also taught my first children’s class which was extremely engaging! A lot of the children at my school have low English skill and used Japanese in the classroom. So it was good practice for all of us to translate what everyone was saying!
After the Event was finished, my Japanese coworker invited me to a local onsen (hot spring) and then we went out for dinner! We split a variety of dishes such as a shrimp and avocado dish, a fried egg appetizer, a cucumber sushi roll and delicious salad. All of the food was so delicious! For dessert we had a couple drinks. I ordered my signature drink, a White Russian, and also tried a strawberry yogurt drink with vodka. All of the drinks had low alcohol content so they were very pleasant to drink. Afterwards, we went to Ingrid’s International Bar and was introduced to some of the other native English teachers there. All of them taught for different schools in Tokushima and were fantastic to talk to! The next day we all went bowling and got to know one another better. Although my bowling stance definitely needs work. it was a fun time! I am excited to meet more people here as a start my second week teaching.
