Here is a collection of shrines and structures that I pass by on my daily commute to work! I live in the Minamiyaso neighborhood of Tokushima so the station is about 10 minutes from me. There are a lot of shrines right off the highway as well as near Tokushima Park. Shiisha and Buddhist statues seem to be common sights in Tokushima Prefecture. People leave offerings to Buddha statues very frequently and when I last went by there were most children’s toys that were contributed. What I found particularly symbolic was there was a Pokemon plush doll of Lugia, who is known as the guardian of the sea, left as an offering. Since Tokushima is considered a port town and is on the coast of Tokushima, thematically this is very fitting. The statues of the tanuki and frog were also very interesting to see. I find it interesting how shrines are scattered through densely populated areas and how each has a different atmosphere. I am looking forward to visiting more of them and seeing what kind of offerings that people leave!
