Yup, you read that title right. While strolling through Golden Gai in Shinjuku on a Saturday evening with a friend, we came across this little gem: Pussyfoot. Golden Gai is a super condensed area of tiny bars (often with less than 10 bar stools) packed into alleyways with a heavy 60s vibe. Many tourists, celebrities, and Shinjuku locals hang around the area and given how small the average bar is, it’s really easy to get to know your neighbors! Golden Gai is famous for having themed bars, such as ones that are music genre inspired, and there is even a 90s troll doll inspired bar that comes with the option to order microwavable pizzas. However, this bar was inspired by cats and featured two live ones you could drink with!
I sat with my friend next to a Japanese guy that was a huge anime fan and also idolized movies like Clockwork Orange. He had also cosplayed a character from the movie at Comiket (where I also had visited 2 months before–small world)! We talked about different series while listening to non-stop Love Live music playing from the speakers. I ordered White Russians and chatted for a while with the bartender and also petted the cats. About an hour later a man in a business suit walked by, who the bartender said was a famous animator for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and they even had some of his artwork on display in the bar! Other celebrities like May’n and a singer from AKB0048 had apparently come to visit as well. With the cute cats and friendly atmosphere, I can see why!
If you’re looking for a truly unique bar experience like no other, I highly recommend Golden Gai because it’s not a place where people party and club like crazy; it has much more of a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The downside is that most bars require a 1000円 and up cover fee, and most cocktails start at 700円. However, at these bars you can genuinely get to know the people that you’re drinking with, and it doesn’t attract the loud and trashy crowd of people that plague other bars. If you’re down for adventure and have at least 3000円 you’re willing to spend, I highly recommend checking this place out!
